In Texas, a 12‑year‑old girl was rescued after she became buried in a deep sand pit she was digging. The Woodlands Fire Department, located just outside Houston, told reporters that on Thanksgiving Day around 5 p.m. a multi‑agency team arrived at a sand bar on the western bank of Panther Creek, near the pedestrian bridge, in response to a “report of a child trapped after a cave in.”
Firefighters, medics and deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office worked together when the hole collapsed, covering the child almost entirely. Her father managed to clear sand from over her head, allowing her to breathe again. By the time the first responders reached the scene, only her head and face were visible. The crews quickly shored up the area and then carefully removed the sand to extract her from the hole.
The operation included personnel from the South Montgomery County Fire Department and the Montgomery County Hospital District. After a medical assessment, the girl was released to her parents, who declined transport to a hospital. The Woodlands Fire Department praised the cooperation of the four agencies, saying, “First responders from four agencies worked together seamlessly to turn a near tragedy into a Thanksgiving story that will be told for decades!”
