Indian High Jumper Sarvesh Kushare Makes History at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Tokyo, September 14: In a thrilling moment for Indian athletics, Sarvesh Kushare has become the first Indian high jumper to qualify for the final at the World Athletics Championships. He cleared an impressive 2.25m in the men’s high jump qualification round on Sunday, securing his spot among the top 12 in the 13-player final.

This marks Kushare’s debut final at the world meet, and he’s ready to chase a medal. Interestingly, the defending Tokyo champion Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy couldn’t make the cut. Tamberi topped out at 2.16m after three tries, missing the 2.21m qualification mark.

India’s medal tally at the World Championships stands at three so far: Anju Bobby George’s bronze in long jump from Paris 2003, Neeraj Chopra’s silver in javelin from Oregon 2022, and his groundbreaking gold from Budapest 2023. Kushare now has a chance to add to this proud list.

The championships kicked off on Saturday with the 35km race walk events. Priyanka Goswami finished 24th in the women’s race, while Sandeep Kumar came in 23rd in the men’s. Unfortunately, Ram Baboo got disqualified in his event.

This 20th edition of the World Athletics Championships runs from September 14 to 21 in Tokyo, drawing over 2,000 athletes from 200 nations competing for 147 medals across 49 events. India’s 19-member squad includes 14 men and five women, targeting glory in 15 events—11 for men and four for women.

Leading the pack is javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra, the first Indian to win gold at the worlds. He’s joined by long jump ace Murali Sreeshankar, women’s javelin record-holder Annu Rani, and rising sprinter Animesh Kujur, who’s making history as India’s first sprinter at the championships.

Other key athletes include triple jumper Praveen Chitravel, 3000m steeplechase runner Parul Chaudhary, and high jumper Abdulla Aboobacker. Gulveer Singh and Pooja will compete in two events each, adding depth to the team.

As the action heats up in Tokyo, all eyes are on these Indian stars to shine on the global stage.
