In a shocking turn of events, beloved Assamese singer and music composer Zubeen Garg has passed away at 52 after a scuba diving mishap in Singapore. The news has left fans and the entire music world heartbroken.
Zubeen Garg was enjoying a dive when the accident happened. Singapore police quickly pulled him from the water and rushed him to a nearby hospital’s ICU. Sadly, despite the best efforts of doctors, he couldn’t be saved.
The Bollywood music scene is reeling from this devastating blow. Tributes are pouring in from fellow artists who shared their grief on social media.
Singer Jubin Nautiyal posted a touching photo of Zubeen with a heartfelt note: "Zubeen Garg (18.11.1972 – 19.09.2025). Your music will echo in our hearts forever, a true talent gone too soon. Rest in peace. Condolences to the family. Shiv shiv shiv."
Papon, another popular singer, expressed his shock: "This is so shocking! The voice of a generation! Gone too soon. At a loss of words! Lost a friend. Lost a brother. A big void. Praying for a peaceful journey of his soul."
Music composer Pritam also shared his sorrow: "Zubeen losing his life in an accident is just the most terrible and saddest news. I’m still trying to come to terms with it… My deepest condolences to Garima and his family. Om Shanti."
Zubeen had flown to Singapore for the fourth North East India Festival at Suntec, set for September 20 and 21. Just hours before the tragedy, he excitedly invited fans on social media.
In a lively video, Zubeen Garg said: “Friends in Singapore, I would like to invite you to the 4th North East India Festival in Suntec, Singapore, during the 20th and 21st of September. Come and explore the exotic part of India. We are carrying quality agri-products, craft products, tea experiences, dance forms, fashion shows and evening musical shows presenting rock bands and rappers from India’s northeast." He added, "I will be there throughout the festival as a cultural brand ambassador and will perform on the 20th evening with my popular Hindi, Bengali and Assamese songs. I would like to invite you all; it will be Saturday and Sunday, and entry is free. All come and support us. Cheers!”
A viral video now circulating online captures Zubeen in high spirits, just before the accident. He was at an event, soaking in live music as part of the crowd, and even jumped on stage for an impromptu jam with his close friend and the band. Fans are calling it his final, joyful performance.
Zubeen Garg was a true icon in Northeast India, especially as the soulful voice of Assam. He shot to fame across the country with his powerful rendition of ‘Ya Ali’ from the 2006 Bollywood film Gangster, turning him into a household name.
Tragedy struck his family before too—his younger sister, Jongki Borthakur, an actress and singer, died in a car accident in Assam’s Sonitpur district in February 2002 while heading to a show. In her honor, Zubeen released the emotional album Xixhu that same year.
Zubeen was married to fashion designer and costume director Garima Saika Garg. His sudden death leaves a huge gap in Indian music, but his songs will live on. Rest in peace, Zubeen Garg.
