Statewide procurement of Kharif crops at MSP begins in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, November 9 – Gujarat’s Agriculture Minister, Jitu Vaghani, kicked off the state‑wide purchase of Kharif crops at the government‑set Minimum Support Price (MSP) in Dehgam, Gandhinagar district. The launch marks the start of a large‑scale effort to give farmers fair returns for their produce.

After the ceremony, Vaghani talked with farmers who had brought in groundnuts, soybeans, moong, and urad to sell at the MSP. The farmers thanked Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s government for buying their crops at prices above the market rate. The CM’s directive authorises procurement worth more than ₹15 000 crore at MSP across Gujarat.

At the Dehgam procurement centre, the minister inspected the set‑up and reviewed the workflow. He said the state is committed to doing everything possible to protect farmers’ interests. The farmers welcomed the decision, noting that the timely purchasing program gives them confidence.

For example, the market price for groundnuts is around ₹5 000 per quintal, but the government’s MSP is ₹7 263 per quintal – a difference of ₹2 263 that has spurred farmers to sell at the higher price.

The event was attended by Dehgam MLA Balrajsinh Chauhan, Dhanvantsinh Chauhan of the Co‑operative Processing Society, Gandhinagar District Collector Mehul K. Dave, Agriculture Department officials, and many farmers.

Gujarat has roughly 4.3–4.5 million Kharif growers. Key crops—groundnut, cotton, paddy, pulses, and soybean—make up more than half of the state’s cropped area. With its diverse agro‑climatic zones, from fertile central plains to the semi‑arid Saurashtra and Kutch, Gujarat remains one of India’s top producers of groundnut and cotton during the monsoon.
