Guwahati, India, Oct 10 – New Zealand’s women’s cricket squad snatched a huge 100‑run victory over Bangladesh at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, turning the tide of their Women’s World Cup campaign after a shaky start.
The Black Caps fell in both of their opening games, losing to reigning champions Australia and to South Africa. Their win against Bangladesh proved a big step forward, giving the team confidence and a much‑needed boost.
Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday built a steady partnership early, rescuing New Zealand from a precarious position. Bangladesh’s bowlers found it difficult to break their rhythm, and the duo lifted the team to a competitive 227‑run total.
Bangladesh struggled to get back on track. Tallies from English bowler Rosemary Mair and Australian all‑rounder Jess Kerr slowed the hosts’ chase. Despite late resistance from Bangladeshi batters Fahima Khatun, Nahida Akter and Rabeya Khan, the team was bundled out for 127 in 39.5 overs – a 100‑run loss and a heavy toll on morale. Mair claimed two wickets for 20 runs, while Kerr took 3‑21.
In the first innings, New Zealand’s batting line‑up fell to 38‑3 by the 11th over. Leg‑spinner Rabeya Khan turned the game against New Zealand, stumping Georgia Plimmer and out‑foxing Amelia Kerr. Former captain Suzie Bates was run‑out after a mis‑communication with Kerr, and her promising 29‑run knock ended early. Devine and Halliday then scratched to a risk‑free rhythm, staying on 62 balls without a boundary.
Once the team settled, the batting duo went on the attack. Halliday swept the Bangladesh spinners, while Devine used her trademark power to drive the ball deep. Their 112‑run partnership gave New Zealand a solid platform, though it was ended in the 39th over when Halliday top‑edged a shot that capped her 69 runs from 104 balls.
With 179‑5 and six overs still left, bowlers Isabella Gaze and Lea Tahuhu produced crucial breakthroughs. Their final bowling spells turned the game in New Zealand’s favour, sealing a total of 227‑9 and a convincing 100‑run victory over Bangladesh. ()
