Delhi: Mizoram officers pick up smart city tips at NDMC

A 25‑person delegation from the Mizoram Secretariat visited the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Thursday to learn about New Delhi’s Smart City initiatives. The visit was part of a training program hosted by NDMC with the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA).

NDMC Secretary Rakesh Kumar opened the session by explaining the council’s integrated, citizen‑first approach to sustainable urban development. “We are building a smart, modern city that serves residents better,” he said.

Senior NDMC officials—including personnel, education, civil and electrical engineers, the chief architect, medical officer, horticulture director and training director—were on hand to share insights. Officer Shakuntala Srivastava gave a short presentation on NDMC’s wide range of smart projects.

Key initiatives highlighted were:

  • Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) – a digital hub where real‑time data from CCTV, air‑quality sensors, smart streetlights, traffic systems, and waste management flows through a “single pane of glass” dashboard for quick, data‑driven decisions.
  • Smart e‑learning – online training platforms for staff.
  • Green energy – solar power projects that cut emissions.
  • Smart parking – app‑based parking guidance.
  • Beautification – aesthetic upgrades to streets and parks.
  • Solid‑waste management – scientific segregation at source and the RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) model.
  • Community‑driven development – the Anupam Colonies project shows how residents help shape local growth.
  • Horticulture expansion – planting trees and green cover across the city.
  • Air‑polution control – mist sprayers on electric poles.
  • E‑waste disposal – safe and scientific handling of electronic waste.

Gauri Shankar Aggarwal, the ICCC in‑charge, walked the delegation through the centre at Palika Kendra, showing how geographic mapping and GPS‑tracked waste trucks increase efficiency.

The Mizoram officers praised NDMC’s smart city achievements and discussed ways to adapt similar practices in Mizoram’s own urban plans.

The visit underscored NDMC’s vision of a resilient, intelligent city that listens and adapts in real time to its people’s needs.
