Farmers’ protest in MP’s Dhar escalates, district admin issues prohibitory orders to ensure law & order (Lead)

Indore: Farmers in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district staged a large demonstration on Monday, which forced the district administration to impose a prohibitory order to maintain law and order.

The protest was organized under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Majdoor Sangh (BKMS) along with other groups, drawing participants from Dhar, Barwani, Khandwa, Khargone, and nearby districts. They blocked a highway at a toll plaza in Manawar town.

After failed attempts to persuade the protesters to disperse, the district authorities applied Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Monday to quell the situation. Security measures at the rally were also tightened.

The demonstration kicked off early Tuesday morning, and as the day went on more farmers arrived on tractor‑trolleys, prompting the administration to station additional police units.

Manawar Sub‑Divisional Magistrate Pramod Gurjar addressed the gathering with a loudspeaker, announcing that Section 163 of the BNS had been enacted. He urged the farmers to avoid any violence.

"Video recording is being carried out by multiple drone cameras to keep an eye on activities at the site. Those will be found disrupting the law and order will face tough action as per the law," the SDM declared over the loudspeaker.

Farmers demanded that the state’s Agriculture Minister, Aidal Singh Kansana, or another senior minister speak to them. They said they were protesting because the government had ignored their concerns.

"In the past six months, we wrote several letters to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and requested a meeting to raise farmers’ issues. However, we didn’t receive any response from the Chief Minister. Now, we are left with no option but to hit the streets to get our voice heard," one farmer explained.

Sources told LatestNewsX that a group of farmers had met with senior BJP leader and State Agriculture Minister Kansana and handed him a memorandum outlining their demands, but no dialogue materialized, leading the farmers back onto the streets.

The march disrupted traffic on NH‑52, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for hours. During the protest, the farmers recited the Hanuman Chalisa and chanted religious slogans while carrying posters and banners.

Government officials arrived at the site, asked the marchers to call it off, and promised to carry their messages to higher authorities. "Some government officials had come and requested to call off the protest, but we want it in writing. Such promises were made earlier also, but nothing has happened so far. We want any senior Minister to come for a meeting here," said BKMS member Ramswaroop Patidar.
