US President Donald Trump has weighed in on the sudden cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, calling it “great news for America.” The move comes after Kimmel faced massive backlash for his comments on the tragic killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Trump didn’t hold back in a fiery post on his Truth Social platform. “The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” he wrote, praising ABC for finally pulling the plug. He even took shots at other late-night hosts, labeling Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers as “two total losers” with “horrible” ratings. Trump urged NBC to cancel their shows too, saying, “Do it, NBC!!!”
So, what led to this drama? Disney-owned ABC has decided to take Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air indefinitely. According to Variety, Nexstar—the company behind many ABC-affiliated stations—announced they’ll skip airing the show for the foreseeable future. Instead, they’ll replace it with other ABC programs. Nexstar strongly objected to Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk’s murder, sparking widespread outrage.
The controversy started during Kimmel’s Monday monologue. He slammed Trump supporters, or the “MAGA gang” (short for Make America Great Again), for trying to twist the facts of Kirk’s death for political gain. We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said, criticizing efforts to politicize the case.
Charlie Kirk, a key figure in Trump’s circle and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed last week at a speaking event on a Utah university campus. Police say 22-year-old Tyler Robinson fired a rifle from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck with one bullet. Robinson was arrested right after and charged with murder.
The backlash has reached high levels. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr promised action against ABC over Kimmel’s comments. After Nexstar’s decision, Carr thanked them on social media, saying local broadcasters must serve the public interest. “While this may be an unprecedented decision, it is important for broadcasters to push back on Disney programming that they determine falls short of community standards.”
This Jimmy Kimmel cancellation has ignited debates about late-night TV, free speech, and the Charlie Kirk murder case. As Trump celebrates, fans and critics alike are watching what happens next to these popular shows.
