A Texas customer walked into a GameStop in Grapevine and walked out with a record‑setting $30,494.70 for a single Pokémon card—an event the retailer says is the most valuable trade‑in in its history. The card was a mint‑condition holographic Gengar from the 2003 set, and it carried a “gem mint” rating from Professional Sports Authenticator, which sets a fair‑market value of $34,883. The buyer had originally acquired the card through GameStop’s program that lets shoppers purchase random, pre‑graded Pokémon cards online and then resell them at preset prices. GameStop highlighted the sale as a counterpoint to critics who argue the company undervalues used gear, noting that it has long paid only a fraction of original prices for items like Nintendos and PlayStations. The company added that anyone claiming the trade‑in values are unfair is factually incorrect. While the card could have fetched more on an auction, the $30,000‑plus offer still represented a generous payout. Pokémon cards, which have surged in value by over 3,200% in the past twenty years, continue to be a hot commodity for collectors.
