India-US Trade Talks Gain Momentum, Piyush Goyal Shares Positive Updates
Union Minister Piyush Goyal brought good news on India-US trade relations during his speech in Abu Dhabi. Speaking at the 13th UAE-India High-Level Joint Task Force on Investments, Goyal said negotiations with the US are heading in the right direction. He called the partnership between the two countries a strong and comprehensive strategic alliance.
The minister highlighted a recent meeting with US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch, which took place just two days ago. "The discussions were productive and on the right track," Goyal noted. "Our relationship with the US is a deep, strategic bond between two friendly nations."
India and the US kicked off talks for a fair Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) back in March. The goal? Wrap up the first phase by October-November 2025. In their latest huddle on Tuesday, Lynch met with India’s Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal to push things forward. Both sides agreed to ramp up efforts for a quick, win-win trade deal.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Lynch led a US team to India on September 16. They chatted with Department of Commerce officials about strengthening India-US trade ties, including the BTA. The talks stayed positive and focused on the future, touching on key deal aspects. Officials decided to speed up work toward a mutually beneficial agreement.
This isn’t their first rodeo—India and the US have already completed five rounds of negotiations. The sixth, planned for August, got pushed back. Lately, they’ve been aiming for an interim trade pact to ease tensions.
Tensions spiked when US President Donald Trump slapped 25% tariffs on Indian goods in July, dashing hopes for a quick interim deal. Days later, he added another 25%, hitting 50% total, over India’s Russian oil imports. Those steeper tariffs kicked in on August 27.
India pushes back on US demands to liberalize its agriculture and dairy sectors. These areas are super sensitive here—they support millions of livelihoods and form the backbone of rural India.
Goyal also stressed that India’s foreign ties stand on their own. No mixing them up. On the UAE front, he praised the rock-solid relationship built on trust and endless opportunities. "It’s a vital strategic partnership," he said.
Looking to the future, Goyal is upbeat about boosting Indian exports to the UAE. He pointed to big growth potential in sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, fish and marine products, and leather goods. "These markets offer huge scope for Indian businesses," he added.
As India navigates global trade challenges, these updates signal brighter days ahead for bilateral ties with key partners like the US and UAE.
