EAM Jaishankar hosts L69-C10 joint ministerial in New York, pushes for UNSC reforms

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar brought together leaders from the Global South in New York on September 24 for the second L69 and C10 Joint Ministerial meeting. The focus? A united push for major reforms to the United Nations Security Council.

Jaishankar shared his excitement on X, posting: “Pleased to host the second edition of L69 & C10 Joint Ministerial in New York today. We gather with a unity of purpose – to push for comprehensive reforms of the UN Security Council as fellow members of the Global South.”

During the event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Jaishankar held several key bilateral meetings. He caught up with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira just before the main session, calling it a great start. He also met Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ Foreign Minister Frederick Stephenson, noting the productive chat.

Jaishankar’s diplomatic schedule was packed. He discussed Europe’s strategic moves and India’s role with Netherlands Foreign Minister David van Weel. “Appreciated the meeting… An insightful conversation,” he posted.

With Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the talk centered on strengthening bilateral ties. Jaishankar said it was a pleasure to review their progress together.

On the Ukraine crisis and India-EU relations, Jaishankar engaged Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. He valued Rasmussen’s views on recent European developments, especially the ongoing conflict, plus ties under Denmark’s EU presidency.

He also connected with Lesotho’s Foreign Minister Lejone Mpotjoana during the high-level talks, and got to know Suriname’s Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva, appreciating his kind words about India-Suriname relations.

Beyond the one-on-ones, Jaishankar spoke at the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries. He stressed how the Global South faces tough times, with long-built rights and goals now at risk from global shocks.

“These challenges come from COVID-19 aftershocks, conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, extreme weather, shaky trade, uncertain investments, high interest rates, and a stalled push for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Jaishankar explained. He urged unity amid rising global worries in this uncertain decade.
