In the wake of the tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi shared her heartfelt condolences on Sunday for the families mourning their loved ones. The incident claimed 38 lives during an event addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay, leaving the community in shock.
Kanimozhi posted on X, calling the news deeply distressing. She highlighted how crowd congestion caused many people to faint and rush to hospitals, with several losing their lives. “This heartbreaking update from Karur fills me with immense shock and sorrow,” she wrote in Tamil and English. She also praised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for ordering urgent aid on a war footing to support those affected.
Late Saturday night, CM Stalin rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur to meet the injured from the Karur stampede. He flew from Chennai to Trichy before driving to the site and paid tribute to the victims. Stalin consoled the grieving families, vowing full government support.
In response to the disaster, which killed 36 people—including eight children and 16 women—Stalin announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each victim’s family. He also pledged Rs 1 lakh to those receiving hospital treatment for injuries from the crowd crush.
To get to the bottom of the Tamil Nadu stampede, Stalin set up a one-member Commission of Inquiry. Retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan will lead it and deliver a detailed report to the government soon.
In his official statement, the Chief Minister expressed profound grief over the “irreplaceable” lives lost at the TVK rally. “This news has shattered our hearts,” he said, extending deepest sympathies to the bereaved. Stalin stressed that everyone in hospitals would get top-notch medical care, as the state steps up to help the Karur community heal from this devastating event.
