Mauritius PM Ramgoolam pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, former PM Vajpayee

Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam kicked off his eight-day India visit with heartfelt tributes and spiritual stops, strengthening the cultural ties between the two nations.

Arriving in New Delhi late Monday night, Ramgoolam wasted no time diving into the itinerary. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth warmly welcomed him at the airport. But before heading to the capital, he and his wife Veena Ramgoolam offered prayers at the famous Tirumala Temple in Tirupati, soaking in the serene vibes.

On Tuesday, the Mauritius PM visited Rajghat in New Delhi to pay his respects to Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation. He also honored former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Sadaiv Atal memorial, highlighting the shared history and leadership bonds.

Earlier in the trip, Ramgoolam made headlines as the second world leader—after Bhutan’s Prime Minister—to visit the newly inaugurated Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on September 12. Leading a 30-member delegation, he received a grand welcome from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The reception featured flowers, a special souvenir, a red-carpet rollout, mantra chants, Kalash-Aarti rituals, and the rhythmic beats of drums and conch shells, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Inside the temple, Ramgoolam and his wife performed aarti and prayed to Ram Lalla for about 30 minutes. They even took time to check out the ongoing construction work, showing keen interest in this iconic site.

The spiritual journey continued in Varanasi last week. Ramgoolam offered prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, joined by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel. That same evening, on September 11, he witnessed the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti on the Varanasi ghats, a highlight for any visitor to the holy city.

Sharing glimpses of the Kashi Vishwanath visit on X (formerly Twitter), Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted, “PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius offered prayers at the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi. A visit reflecting the deep cultural and civilizational bonds that unite India and Mauritius.”

Beyond the spiritual side, Ramgoolam’s trip packed in key diplomacy too. On September 11, he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, covering trade, security, and people-to-people ties to boost India-Mauritius relations.

This visit underscores the strong India-Mauritius friendship, rooted in shared heritage and mutual respect.
