US State Department spokesperson Margaret MacLeod shared Washington’s firm views on H-1B visas and trade ties with Russia during a briefing in New York on Thursday. With the Ukraine war still raging, she highlighted growing worries about oil imports from Russia.
On H-1B visas, MacLeod stressed that the US aims to boost its own IT sector by putting American workers first. “H-1B focuses on investing in the American IT industry,” she said. “Our top priority is training US citizens to build skills and jobs right here at home.”
She then turned to Russia’s oil exports and their link to the Ukraine conflict. MacLeod pointed out that President Donald Trump wants to wrap up the war fast to stop the loss of lives. “As long as Russia earns money from selling oil, that cash fuels weapons for the fight,” she explained. “That’s why the US pushes to cut back on all trade with Russia.”
MacLeod also recapped Trump’s recent speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He kept the spotlight on core goals like peace, sovereignty, and independence. “These are the building blocks of the UN charter and a stable world,” she noted. Trump called on the UN to get back on track after 80 years of ups and downs. “We want to work with other nations to make the UN more fair and accountable,” she added.
In his UNGA address, Trump directly called out China and India for keeping the Ukraine war going through their Russian oil buys. “China and India are the main funders of this conflict by snapping up Russian oil,” Trump stated during his hour-long talk amid global talks on wars and tensions.
Trump’s words come as his administration slaps steeper tariffs on India’s Russian oil imports. The US just added a 25% levy, bumping the total tariff on Indian goods to 50%—one of the highest rates out there. This move ramps up pressure on nations trading with Russia despite the Ukraine crisis. ()
