Australia and India signed a new defence agreement in Canberra on Thursday, boosting how the two militaries work together. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles said the deal shows “deep trust and strategic alignment” and takes the partnership to a higher operational level. He called the “staff talks” agreement very significant and expressed excitement about the move.
The agreement expands interoperability, information sharing and joint operational coordination between the Australian Defence Force and the Indian Armed Forces. It also includes plans to improve maritime security cooperation in the Indo‑Pacific region.
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Canberra for the signing. He was welcomed by Richard Marles, who performed a traditional “Welcome to Country” smoke ceremony at Parliament House to honor Indigenous heritage. During the visits, Rajnath and Marles held comprehensive talks about strengthening the India‑Australia defence partnership and maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also joined the talks. He shook hands with Rajnath, a gesture that underscored the growing importance of India in Australia’s strategic outlook. The meeting highlighted the deepening ties between the two Indo‑Pacific partners and their shared commitment to a rules‑based order.
