Mizoram’s Sairang railway line planned to be linked with Kaladan project in Myanmar: Guv Singh

Aizawl, Nov 29 (LatestNewsX) – On Saturday, Mizoram’s Governor, Gen Vijay Kumar Singh (retd), said that the new Sairang railway line is slated to become part of the ambitious Kaladan Multi‑Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) in Myanmar.
During a briefing with a visiting media team, he expressed confidence that the stretch linking the Sairang line near Aizawl to the Kaladan corridor would progress smoothly.
He also highlighted ongoing development efforts in the state, calling the recently opened 51.38‑km Bairabi‑Sairang route a “game‑changer” for Mizoram. The line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Aizawl on September 13, connects Bairabi in southern Assam to Sairang.
A senior Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officer noted that the project showcases remarkable engineering feats, including 45 tunnels, 143 bridges—one taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar—and four new stations at Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
He added that the Bairabi‑Sairang line marks a historic milestone for the Northeast by providing the first rail link to Mizoram’s capital, effectively integrating the state into India’s railway network. “Despite extremely challenging terrain and adverse weather, the NFR Construction team successfully executed this complex project,” he said, “which will boost trade, tourism, and socio‑economic development across Mizoram and the wider Northeast.”
At present, four Northeastern capital cities—Dispur (near Guwahati) in Assam, Agartala in Tripura, Naharlagun near Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar, and Sairang near Aizawl—are connected by rail. Work is underway to link Manipur’s Imphal and Nagaland’s Kohima to the national network.
The NFR plans to extend the line to the Myanmar border via Manipur and Mizoram. The final location survey for the 111‑km Imphal‑Moreh section is in progress, while a new broad‑gauge line from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, near the Myanmar frontier, is also slated for construction.
The earlier 223‑km Sairang‑Hmawngbuchhuah railway project had been shelved due to “economic non‑viability.” State politicians, however, have repeatedly requested its revival, holding meetings with NFR officials in Guwahati and Delhi.
An NFR representative explained that although the proposed line is “economically not feasible,” it will be revisited because it is strategically crucial for linking Northeast India with Myanmar’s Kaladan project under the Act‑East Policy. Preliminary estimates put the cost of the 223‑km route at ₹15 000 crore.
The final survey is delayed by the volatile situation in Myanmar, which is currently governed by a military junta.
