A tragic stampede at actor and TVK party leader Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has led to more arrests and court actions. On September 30, a local court in Karur sent two Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) workers to judicial custody until October 14. The incident on September 27 claimed 41 lives so far, shocking the community.
The two arrested are Mathiyazhagan, TVK’s Karur West District Secretary, and MC Paun Raj, a Karur town functionary. Police say they helped set up flagpoles and flex banners for Vijay’s campaign rally. Mathiyazhagan got arrested on Monday, while officers took MC Paun Raj into custody today after a medical check.
TVK lawyer Advocate Manikandan spoke out in court, saying an FIR names three people, including the Karur District Secretary and two others. “We followed all the rules for permission and ran the meeting legally,” he explained. “We even requested security for 10,000 people in our letter to police. They canceled one meeting on their advice, but didn’t warn us about the growing crowd or provide enough officers.” The judge agreed to follow the law, allowing the party to apply for bail soon. The lawyer added that the 14-day custody gives time for further legal steps.
In related news from Chennai, police arrested YouTuber Felix Gerald for allegedly spreading false information on his channel about the Karur stampede. Authorities say his videos fueled confusion during the chaos.
Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh addressed reporters on Tuesday, vowing tough measures. “We’ve set up an inquiry commission led by a retired judge to probe the Tamil Nadu stampede,” he said. “If anyone is at fault for the Vijay rally tragedy, they’ll face strict action—no one gets away with lapses like this.” The investigation aims to uncover what went wrong and prevent future disasters at political events.
