Venezuela’s Maduro spotted for first time in days, ending flight speculation

After five days of no appearances, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro emerged in public on Sunday, ending the chatter that he’d fled the country after a rumored ultimatum from President Trump to leave or face consequences. At a coffee‑industry awards event in eastern Caracas, the 63‑year‑old leader handed out prizes and gave remarks, according to a CNN report. The last piece of evidence of Maduro’s whereabouts was a Wednesday video posted on his Telegram channel, where he was seen driving around the city.

The Miami Herald said Trump had offered Maduro, his wife, and son a safe exit from the South American nation if he agreed to hand over power immediately. Reuters later noted that the Maduro administration had counter‑offered to surrender political control but keep command of the armed forces, leading to a stalemate.

Earlier on Saturday, Trump warned pilots to treat the Venezuelan airspace as closed but told reporters aboard Air Force One, “don’t read anything into it.” When pressed to confirm the claim that he’d spoken directly to Maduro, the president refrained, saying simply, “I don’t want to comment on that – the answer is yes.” Trump added, “I wouldn’t say it went well or badly. It was a phone call.”

The Maduro administration has yet to comment on the conversation. Meanwhile, since early September, U.S. forces have carried out almost two dozen strikes on suspected drug‑trafficking sites in Venezuela, killing more than 80 people.
