JNPort PSA Terminal’s 2nd phase inauguration makes Maha home to India’s largest container terminal: CM Fadnavis

Mumbai celebrates a major milestone in its maritime industry! On September 4, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the opening of the new phase at JN Port—specifically, the PSA Mumbai Terminal’s second phase (BMCT Phase-2). This grand event marks the beginning of a new era for India’s shipping and trade sectors, as Maharashtra now hosts the country’s largest container terminal.
During the inauguration, CM Fadnavis highlighted how this development boosts Maharashtra’s position as India’s top cargo hub. He said, “This is a big step forward for the state’s port capacity. Once Vadhavan Port starts full operations, Maharashtra could become one of the world’s top 10 ports, shaping global trade for decades to come.”
He also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary port-led development strategy for achieving such impressive progress. “Thanks to strong teamwork between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and PSA India, we’re seeing real growth—more capacity, better efficiency, and a stronger global maritime presence for India,” he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, virtually inaugurated the second phase of the PSA Mumbai Terminal. This expansion increases the port’s total container handling capacity to 4.8 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), making it a powerhouse in India’s maritime scene.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), India’s leading container port, features five major dedicated cargo terminals run by international experts. The port has a deep draft of over 15 meters, allowing it to handle large vessels carrying up to 18,000 TEUs. Currently, JNPT processes more than half—about 54%—of all container cargo moving through India’s major ports.
This milestone at JN Port highlights India’s growing strength in global shipping and trade. With ongoing projects like Vadhavan Port and innovative infrastructure, India is well on its way to becoming a major player in international maritime trade.
