Sergey Lavrov on India-Russia economic partnership

Russia Assures Strong India Ties Amid US Oil Sanctions at UNGA

New York—Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pushed back against concerns over US tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session. He made it clear that the deep economic partnership between India and Russia remains rock-solid.

Speaking to , Lavrov addressed the secondary sanctions the US has slapped on India over its Russian oil imports. "The economic partnership between India and Russia is not under threat," he stated. He pointed out that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar have firmly said India picks its own partners. If the US wants to boost trade with India, Lavrov added, they’re open to talks on any terms. But when it comes to deals with other countries—like trade, investments, military ties, technology, and more—India handles those directly with the nations involved.

Lavrov emphasized Russia’s full respect for India’s national interests and Modi’s foreign policy approach. "We hold regular contacts at the highest level," he said, highlighting the strong bonds that keep things moving forward.

Diving into India-Russia relations, Lavrov described their ties as a long-standing strategic partnership. Over time, it’s evolved—India suggested upgrades, leading to what they now call a "particularly privileged strategic partnership." He stressed that any tensions, such as those between India and the US or other countries, don’t affect the Russia-India dynamic.

The minister also brought up the recent face-to-face meeting between Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China. Looking ahead, Putin has a visit lined up to New Delhi in December. Their agenda covers a lot of ground: booming trade, military and technical cooperation, finance, humanitarian efforts, healthcare, high-tech innovations like artificial intelligence, and tight coordination on the world stage through groups like SCO and BRICS, plus one-on-one talks.

This comes as India continues to navigate global energy needs and strengthens its position in international forums, with Russia standing firm as a key ally.
