China Open: Satwiksairaj-Chirag advance to finals

India’s star badminton duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, are one win away from glory at the China Open. The popular men’s doubles pair stormed into the finals after a strong semifinal victory over Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik on Saturday.

Satwik and Chirag took control early, winning 21-17 in the first game and sealing the match 21-14 in the second. The entire clash lasted just 41 minutes, showcasing their sharp skills and dominance on the court in Beijing.

They’ll face the winner of the second semifinal in the final on Sunday. This marks their second final appearance this season, just two weeks after a heartbreaking loss in the Hong Kong Open title match. There, they fell to China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in a thriller: 21-19, 14-21, 17-21.

The Indian shuttlers, affectionately called Sat-Chi, powered through the quarterfinals on Friday too. They crushed China’s Ren Xiang Yu and Xie Haonan 21-14, 21-14 in only 38 minutes, proving why they’re a force in badminton.

Fans remember their recent bronze at the World Championships in August—their second straight medal at the big event. Yet, Satwik and Chirag haven’t claimed a BWF World Tour title this year. Their last victory came at the Thailand Open in May 2023, so they’re hungry to end the drought at this Super 1000 tournament.
