Singer‑songwriter Lizzo has found herself in the middle of yet another legal dispute. On October 21, a Georgia‑based rights group called GRC Trust filed a copyright infringement suit against the artist over an unreleased track. The claim says that Lizzo used a 13‑second clip of Sam Dees’s 1970s soul classic “Win or Lose (We Tried)” in a TikTok video that went viral during the summer. In the clip, Lizzo also referenced Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle ads with the line, “B‑‑‑‑ I got good jeans like I’m Sydney.”
GRC Trust, represented by publisher Jimmy Ginn, says it tried to reach a settlement with Lizzo before filing the lawsuit. The lawsuit argues that even though the song hasn’t been commercially released, the short TikTok preview gave it enough exposure to create liability.
Lizzo’s team reacted quickly, stating they were “surprised” by the filing. Their spokesperson added that the track has no commercial release or monetization plans at the moment and that no decision has been made about whether the music will ever hit stores or streaming platforms.
The singer has also been open about her frustrations with the current music‑industry landscape. In a recent TikTok post, she warned that algorithms are making it hard for fans to even notice new releases. “The music industry is in complete shambles right now,” she wrote, noting that even top artists are struggling with the lack of control over streaming algorithms.
Last month, Lizzo dropped a 13‑track mixtape called My Face Hurts From Smiling, which features collaborations with SZA and Doja Cat. Despite the buzz, the singer admitted that her new music hasn’t reached her audience as expected.
With the lawsuit looming, it remains to be seen how this legal battle will affect Lizzo’s upcoming releases and how she will navigate the increasingly automated world of music streaming.
