Hyderabad, Nov 2 – Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, the face of the BJP in Telangana, confronted the state Congress government over a “fine rice” program during a press briefing on Sunday.
The dispute began after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy allegedly warned residents of the Jubilee Hills constituency that the government would halt welfare schemes, including free rice distribution, if voters chose a party other than Congress in the upcoming by‑election on November 11.
Kishan Reddy called the claim “misleading” and demanded the Congress side clarify who actually runs the rice scheme. He pointed out that it is a central programme, not a state one. “The central government provides ₹42 per kilogram, while the state only gives ₹15 but pretends it is its own project,” he said.
The BJP has filed a complaint with the Election Commission over the Chief Minister’s threat, stating it violates the Model Code of Conduct, which forbids threatening voters with the removal of welfare benefits.
Reddy further accused Congress of winning the Telangana government through dishonest means and of draining the state coffers, especially in education and health. He dismissed the Chief Minister’s claim that he was hindering the Hyderabad Metro expansion and argued that Congress’s criticism of the BJP is a strategy to capture Muslim‑majority voters in the area.
During the campaign, Kishan Reddy announced that BJP workers are conducting 50 “Maha Padyatras” in Jubilee Hills, going door‑to‑door to explain what he called the failures of Congress and the BRS party. He promised rigorous development plans for the constituency if his candidate wins.
Jubilee Hills falls under the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat, which the BJP currently represents.
