Six of family hit by freight train in MP, woman killed

The tragedy unfolded at Jabalpur’s Madan Mahal Railway Station on the night of December 6. A family from Narsinghpur district—Pushpa Soni (39), Shivani Patel (22), Nanhi Bai (40) and their three young children, including a four‑year‑old Reeti Patel, a two‑year‑old Indrajit Patel, and another child of the same age—were caught in a terrible accident on Platform 1.

The group had disembarked from the Janshatabdi Express and were moving between platforms. Rather than using the footbridge, they crossed the tracks directly. An approaching freight train, traveling fast from the opposite direction, struck them, killing Pushpa Soni instantly and leaving the others with serious injuries.

Passengers and bystanders pulled the injured to Jabalpur Medical College Hospital for urgent care. The freight train manager stopped the train immediately after impact, but the damage had already been inflicted. The lack of station security personnel at the time has drawn sharp criticism, as a guard or rail staff could have possibly deterred the family from crossing the tracks.

Police, specifically the Government Railway Police, are investigating. They’re reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing eyewitnesses. Authorities have confirmed that two of the women and three children are still in intensive care, while the station administration faces scrutiny over safety lapses.

This incident serves as another stark reminder of the ongoing risk passengers face when they ignore train safety warnings and refuse to use footbridges.
