K’taka Cong to Nadda: Act against Union Minister Joshi, MP Surya for opposing caste census

In Bengaluru, the ruling Congress party fired off a strong letter on Monday to BJP national president J.P. Nadda, slamming two key party leaders—Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya—for their fierce opposition to Karnataka’s ongoing OBC survey. The survey, often called the state’s caste census, aims to gather vital data on Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities to boost social justice and protect reservation rights.

Ramesh Babu, a Congress MLC and head of the party’s media and communication wing in Karnataka, led the charge in the letter. He called out Joshi and Surya for labeling the OBC survey a “conspiracy” against Backward Classes and the reservation system. Babu stressed that the survey follows India’s Constitution and Supreme Court rulings. It collects accurate info on the social and educational status of OBC groups, helping the government craft better welfare policies and ensure fair representation.

But Babu argued that the duo’s comments do real harm. They undermine efforts to uplift educationally and socially backward communities, sow confusion and division among OBC voters, and clash with the BJP’s own promises to safeguard reservations and OBC interests. “It’s shocking for senior BJP figures to attack a legal process designed to protect Backward Classes rights,” Babu wrote. He accused them of stirring up doubts about the party’s true commitment to OBC welfare, potentially eroding trust in the BJP.

Babu didn’t hold back on demands. He urged Nadda to take strict action against Joshi and Surya for their “anti-OBC stance.” The Congress leader also called on the BJP to quickly state its official support for the Karnataka OBC survey and reassure Backward Classes that their reservations and constitutional protections remain rock-solid. OBC communities, he noted, form the backbone of society and politics—ignoring their concerns could push them further away from the party.

This clash highlights growing tensions over the caste census in Karnataka, where data from the OBC survey could shape future policies on social justice and equitable opportunities for marginalized groups.
