World Athletics C’ships: Portugal’s Nader edges Wightman to win men’s 1,500m title

Historic Wins and Thrilling Qualifiers at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

In a nail-biting finish at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Portugal’s Isaac Nader grabbed the gold in the men’s 1,500m race on Wednesday. The 26-year-old clocked an impressive 3:34.10, marking his first-ever global title. This breakthrough comes after Nader’s earlier top-eight finishes at the World Indoor Championships, proving he’s ready for the big leagues.

Britain’s Jake Wightman, the defending 2022 world champion, came oh-so-close but settled for silver with a time of 3:34.12—just 0.02 seconds behind. Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot rounded out the podium with bronze in 3:34.25. What a dramatic showdown for athletics fans!

Shifting to the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, Kenya’s Faith Cherotich dominated the track with a stunning championship record of 8:51.59 to claim gold. The 24-year-old, who snagged bronze at the 2023 Budapest Worlds and the 2024 Paris Olympics, showed her steeplechase prowess once again.

Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi, the defending champion and Paris Olympic gold medalist, fought hard but took silver in 8:56.46. Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew impressed with a personal best of 8:58.86 for bronze. Cherotich’s win highlights Kenya’s strong steeplechase tradition in world athletics.

Over in the men’s javelin throw qualifiers, India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem both punched their tickets to the final—but in very different ways. The two-time Olympic and World Championships medalist Chopra nailed it on his first try with a solid 84.85m throw, easily clearing the mark.

Nadeem, the Paris Olympic gold medalist, had fans on edge as he needed his third attempt to secure a spot with 85.28m. In the qualified list, Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters led with a massive 89.83m, followed by Germany’s Julian Weber at 87.21m. Nadeem landed fourth, with Chopra right behind in fifth. Expect fireworks in the javelin final from these rivals!

Earlier on Tuesday, New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr soared to victory in the men’s high jump final. The 29-year-old Olympic champion cleared a world-leading 2.36m for his first global outdoor title, delighting the crowd.

South Korea’s Woo Sang-hyeok, the 2022 world indoor champ, grabbed silver with 2.34m—his second straight Worlds silver. Czech Republic’s Jan Stefela earned bronze at 2.31m, beating Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk on countback. Kerr’s jump adds another chapter to the exciting high jump events at the championships.
