Sukanta Majumdar, the Union Minister of State for Education and former BJP state president, said his convoy was attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists in Nabadwip, Nadia district, West Bengal, on Wednesday night.
The incident happened as he was leaving a rally earlier that day. According to Majumdar, TMC supporters assaulted one of his vehicles during a clash that erupted between BJP and TMC fans. He claimed the attack was unprovoked and that the attackers were drunk. Majumdar also reported that several BJP supporters were punched hard by TMC‑backed goons, some of whom suffered serious injuries.
TMC officials denied any wrongdoing. Biman Saha, the chairman of the Nabadwip Municipality, said the scuffle began when BJP supporters attacked a local TMC trade‑union office, the INTTUC. When INTTUC activists protested near the bus stand, TMC members responded, sparking a broader fight between the two groups.
This attack is part of a series of recent violent incidents involving BJP leaders in West Bengal. Last month, Khagen Murmu, a BJP Member of Parliament from Malda, was badly injured when his car was hit in Jalpaiguri by TMC activists. In October, Raju Bista, the BJP MP for Darjeeling, claimed his convoy was struck by TMC supporters near Sukhia Pokhari.
The elected officials involved in these incidents stress that political rallies and public gatherings in West Bengal remain highly volatile, and both parties urge calm and law‑enforcement to intervene swiftly in future disputes.
