Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled two new farm programs on Saturday that the government says will boost India’s food security and lift millions of farmers out of poverty. The plans – the Pradhan Mantri Dhan‑Dhana Krishi Yojana and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses – together cost Rs 35,440 crore (about US$4.8 billion) and aim to make the country more self‑reliant in crops.
During a live address from New Delhi, Modi highlighted the two schemes’ focus on #selfreliance and farmer welfare. “These projects will transform the fortunes of our farmers,” he said, stressing that the government’s agricultural reforms started in 2014 are now beginning to show results.
Key highlights of the launch
| Scheme | Cost | Goals |
|---|---|---|
| PM Dhan‑Dhana Krishi Yojana | Rs 24,000 crore | Boost productivity, adopt crop diversification, improve post‑harvest storage, upgrade irrigation, and provide easy credit in 100 chosen districts |
| Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses | Rs 11,440 crore | Increase pulse yields, grow cultivation area, strengthen the pulse value chain, and cut post‑harvest losses |
| Total | Rs 35,440 crore |
Modi used the occasion – the 111th birth anniversary of national hero Jayaprakash Narayan – to point out how the BJP government has shifted India’s agricultural strategy. He criticized earlier administrations for ignoring farmers and for letting agencies operate in silos, which according to him weakened the sector.
Achievements under the new government
- Exports: India’s agricultural exports nearly doubled in the last 11 years.
- Grains: Production rose by about 90 million tonnes.
- Fruits & veggies: Up by more than 64 million tonnes.
- Milk & fish: India remains the world’s top milk producer and second‑largest fish producer.
- Honey & eggs: Honey production doubled; egg output also doubled over the same period.
- Infrastructure: Six large fertiliser plants have opened, 250 million soil‑health cards issued, micro‑irrigation covers 100 lakh hectares, and the PM Crop Insurance Scheme has paid out Rs 200,000 crore in claims.
“From seeds to markets, we have delivered real change for every farmer in our country,” Modi said. He urged the public to expect a fresh wave of growth now that the government is committed to inclusive, sustainable agriculture.
The two new schemes join a suite of initiatives aimed at making Indian food production more resilient and profitable, while keeping farmers’ incomes higher and the environment safer.
