Timeline showing movements of Brown University mass shooting suspect released by FBI

The FBI on Tuesday released a detailed video timeline tracking a heavyset person of interest seen moving through streets near Brown University on the day of the deadly campus shooting.

The footage, compiled from 15 separate home security cameras in the neighborhood, shows the stocky man wandering and later hurrying through nearby streets — even passing emergency vehicles as he fled the area following Saturday’s attack.

According to investigators, the individual moved through Cooke, Manning, Benevolent, George, and Hope streets on the eastern side of the Brown University campus before the violence unfolded.

The earliest clips are timestamped at 2:00 p.m., roughly two hours before the shooting that left two students dead and nine others wounded. Over the next hour, the person of interest is seen repeatedly circling the residential neighborhood, crossing in front of the same houses multiple times.

Around 2:10 p.m., the man stopped outside a home, clasped his arms behind his back, and turned away as a car approached, according to the video. Much of his movement centers around Cooke Street, where he appeared startled by a passerby and abruptly doubled back around 2:16 p.m.

In the final clip before the attack, the individual is seen walking alongside Brown University’s Barus and Holley engineering building.

Gunfire erupted inside the engineering building at approximately 4:03 p.m., when the shooter opened fire during a classroom session, killing two students. No video footage exists from inside the building during the attack.

Just minutes after the shooting was reported, a traffic camera captured the same person of interest briskly walking past police vehicles on campus. At 4:06 p.m., he was seen heading north on Hope Street, according to the FBI’s timeline.

Brown University issued a shelter-in-place order at 4:22 p.m., according to a message sent to alumni.

The Providence Police Department also released enhanced images Tuesday, offering the clearest look yet at the person of interest. In the footage, the pot-bellied man is wearing a black hat, a medical mask, dark pants, and a light gray coat.

Police initially detained a suspect early Sunday morning but released him later that night, stating only that the investigation “now points in a different direction.”

The victims were identified as Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, and Ella Cook, 19, who were fatally shot when the gunman opened fire during an economics class final review session.

Umurzokov, a naturalized Uzbek-American from Virginia, aspired to become a neurosurgeon. His sisters remembered him as “gentle” and someone who “always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation.”

Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, served as vice president of the university’s Republican club. Her pastor described her as a “tremendous bright light” who brought peace and faith to those around her.
