Mumbai – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday in Mumbai to discuss a growing partnership built on trust, talent and technology.
During a joint press conference, Modi praised the dynamic energy of India and the expertise of the UK. He said the two countries are “natural partners” because both share values such as democracy, freedom and the rule of law.
A key focus was the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) that was signed in July when Modi visited London. The deal is set to lower import costs between the two nations, boost trade, and create jobs for young people. Modi highlighted that CETA will help Indian industries and consumers by opening new markets.
Modi also announced that nine UK universities will open campuses in India, noting that Southampton University already has an active campus in Gurugram.
On security matters, the leaders discussed the Indo‑Pacific region, maritime safety, and global stability. They agreed to support peace in Ukraine and Gaza through dialogue and diplomacy, and to strengthen maritime security in the Indo‑Pacific.
In defense, Modi confirmed a cooperation agreement that will see Indian Air Force flying instructors train as Royal Air Force instructors in the UK.
The leaders also unveiled plans for an Industry Guild and a Supply Chain Observatory focused on critical minerals. The observatory will have a satellite campus at the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.
Starmer’s visit marked the largest trade mission the UK has ever sent to India, following Modi’s trip to the UK earlier this year. The meeting underscored the momentum behind India‑UK ties in trade, education, defense and global diplomacy.
