Truck driver rescued after dangling 100 feet in the air off West Virginia highway

A truck driver was pulled to safety after a commercial semi trailed, stuck on a snow‑covered bridge on U.S. Route 35 in Mason County, West Virginia, dangling nearly 100 feet above the ground. The incident happened just after 6:25 a.m. when first responders from the Hurricane Fire Department were called to a motor‑vehicle collision that turned out to be anything but ordinary. From the bridge, the driver could see the treacherous drop right in front of him.

Local and county crews quickly closed the highway and set up a rope rescue. Using two heavy “wrecker” trucks, they erected three rope systems—one truck anchored to the bridge and the other holding the hanging cab to keep it from falling. After about five hours, Hurricane Fire Department volunteer Westley Quinn braved the height, was lowered onto the bridge, and secured the driver with a harness. The driver was then hoisted back to safety and emerged unhurt. According to Mason County Commission President Rick Handley, the responding departments—Hurricane, Point Pleasant, Winfield, Buffalo, St. Albans, Nitro and Teays Valley—played a heroic role in this dramatic rescue.
