In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel called for strong action to wipe out sickle cell anaemia, a major genetic disease hitting tribal areas hard. He wants elected leaders like MLAs and MPs to jump in actively and push for more funding to tackle this health challenge head-on.
During a key review meeting at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, the Governor checked on ongoing health programs aimed at eradicating sickle cell anaemia in Madhya Pradesh. Senior officials from the health and family welfare department, AYUSH, and tribal affairs joined the discussion.
Officials updated him that the state’s 100-day sickle cell testing campaign wrapped up successfully, handing out over 12 lakh genetic cards to patients. This big win in sickle cell detection and awareness has already made a real difference.
Governor Patel praised the progress but urged extending the drive by another 125 days. “We need to set up screening camps for sickle cell anaemia and tuberculosis (TB) right in weekly markets,” he said. “This way, people in remote tribal regions can easily access these vital health services.”
He also stressed keeping health workers closely linked with Anganwadi centres to boost family welfare programs. “Anganwadi centres can supercharge our efforts to reach every corner,” Patel added. During his district tours, he wants strict reviews of key schemes like PM JANMAN, Dharti Abha, sickle cell management, and TB control.
On top of that, the Governor pushed for better access to Ayurvedic medicines as part of sickle cell treatment in Madhya Pradesh. He directed officials to ensure patients get this traditional care option. Already, a pilot project has delivered Ayurvedic medicines to 1,546 patients in Dhar district and 1,015 in Barwani, showing promising results in tribal health initiatives.
