Jagan hails GST 2.0 as revolutionary step, says will give impetus to investment

Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy hailed the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) restructuring as a game-changer for a simpler and fairer tax system. On Monday, as GST 2.0 rolled out across India, Reddy shared his excitement on X, formerly Twitter.

“This GST restructuring marks a revolutionary step toward a simpler, fairer tax system,” Reddy said. “It’s a smart move that makes goods and services more affordable for every citizen.” He acknowledged that some initial glitches and complaints might pop up, but he remains optimistic. “It’s part of the process, and I believe the benefits will reach everyday consumers. This could really boost spending and investment in our economy.”

Reddy’s YSR Congress Party, the main opposition in Andhra Pradesh, isn’t alone in its praise. The party has teamed up with the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), along with allies Jana Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to welcome these next-generation GST reforms.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu echoed the enthusiasm. On Sunday, he congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “visionary” launch of GST 2.0 and the start of GST Bachat Utsav, a celebration focused on saving money for citizens. “This puts people at the heart of governance,” Naidu said.

Earlier that day, Naidu expressed heartfelt thanks to Modi on behalf of Andhra Pradesh residents for this “bold and visionary” reform. Posting on X after Modi’s national address, Naidu called it a “double celebration” timed perfectly with the festive season. “People will enjoy lower prices, easier taxes, and a stronger, more inclusive economy,” he added.

Under the new GST 2.0 rules, India has slashed the number of tax slabs down to just two: 5% and 18%. Almost 99% of essential items now sit in the lower 5% bracket. Naidu highlighted how this will make daily life more affordable, especially for the middle class, poor, farmers, women, and youth. “It cuts costs, helps businesses thrive, and draws in more investment,” he explained. These GST reforms promise to ease the burden on families and spark economic growth just in time for the holidays.
