
Senior lawyer and former Mizoram governor Swaraj Kaushal, who was also the husband of the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and the father of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, passed away on Thursday at the age of 73. In a heartfelt social‑media message, Bansuri honored her father, writing, “Papa Swaraj Kaushal ji, your affection, your discipline, your simplicity, your patriotism, and your boundless patience are the light of my life that will never dim.” She went on to say, “Your departure has descended upon me as the deepest pain of the heart, but the mind holds onto this belief that you have now reunited with Mother, in the presence of God, in eternal peace,” adding that being his daughter is the greatest pride of her life and that his legacy, values and blessings will guide all her future endeavors. Many leaders from across the political spectrum paid tribute to the late lawyer after he was cremated at the Lodhi Road cremation ground that evening. Born in Solan on 12 July 1952, Kaushal was a distinguished criminal attorney who studied in Delhi and Chandigarh, and served as Governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993. He also represented Haryana in Parliament from 1998 to 2004 as a member of the Haryana Vikas Party, serving two terms in the Rajya Sabha. In 1975 he married Sushma Swaraj, and the couple’s only child, Bansuri, is now a BJP Lok Sabha MP for the New Delhi constituency; Sushma Swaraj died in August 2019 of a cardiac arrest. Kaushal was renowned as an expert on the Northeast and its insurgency issues, playing a pivotal role in the 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord that ended two decades of conflict, and he was appointed the state’s first Advocate General in 1987. Earlier in his career, he gained notoriety for representing socialist leader George Fernandes in the Baroda dynamite case trial during the Emergency of 1975‑77.
