Bihar government approves land acquisition for two airports

Bihar’s government took big steps Friday to improve air travel and local elections in the state. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinet approved key projects in Patna, focusing on better connectivity and smoother voting processes.

First up, the cabinet greenlit land buys for two new airport developments in Saharsa and Bhagalpur. These moves aim to boost Bihar’s regional air links under the popular UDAN scheme, building on successes like the Darbhanga and Purnea airports, plus ongoing work at Bihta near Patna.

In Saharsa, officials will acquire over 1,200 acres of extra land to lengthen the runway. The state set aside Rs 147.76 crore for compensation to landowners. Locals have pushed for this upgrade for years, and it could turn Saharsa into a lively center for business and tourism in the Mithila area, bringing passenger flights closer to everyday people.

Over in Bhagalpur, the plan calls for grabbing 931 acres in the Sultanganj area to build a brand-new greenfield airport from the ground up. Compensation here totals Rs 472.72 crore. Once finished, this spot will serve as a major air gateway for Bhagalpur and nearby districts, making travel easier for thousands.

These airport projects highlight Bihar’s push to connect remote areas better, sparking economic growth and making the state more accessible.

In election news, the cabinet okayed using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the 2026 Panchayat polls. They allocated Rs 208.27 crore to buy multi-post EVMs, detachable memory modules, totaliser machines, and power packs directly from ECIL in Hyderabad. This switch promises faster, more transparent local elections, cutting down on old-school hassles.

Government officials say these choices show Bihar’s commitment to strong infrastructure and fair governance.

The cabinet also backed plans to revamp the Vishnupad Temple in Gaya, modeling it after the famous Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. This could supercharge religious tourism in Bihar, drawing more visitors to its sacred sites.

All in all, the meeting under Nitish Kumar approved 129 proposals, covering a wide range of development ideas for the state.
