Nagarjuna expresses “gratitude” as Delhi High Court offers protection to personality rights

Telugu superstar Nagarjuna is breathing a sigh of relief after the Delhi High Court stepped in to safeguard his personality rights in the digital world. The actor, known for his blockbuster career in the Telugu film industry, shared his thanks on X (formerly Twitter) following the court’s decision.
"Grateful to the Hon’ble Delhi High Court for protecting my personality rights in today’s digital age," Nagarjuna posted. He also gave a shoutout to his legal team, saying, "The vital legal strategy and arguments were led by Senior Counsel Mr. Vaibhav Gaggar, and Mr. Pravin Anand along with Ms. Vaishali, Mr. Somdev, and Mr. Vibhav. Thank you for standing by me."
The case came before Justice Tejas Karia on Thursday, where the court considered granting temporary relief to Nagarjuna. His lawyers pointed out serious misuse of his image online, including fake pornographic videos linked to him, unauthorized merchandise sales, and AI-generated content that twists his likeness.
They highlighted YouTube shorts and paid ads using Nagarjuna’s hashtags, warning that this material could feed into AI models for even more fake content. The court noted how easily generative AI grabs stuff from the internet, no matter if it’s real or not. While it can order the takedown of specific links—14 have been flagged so far—Justice Karia raised a key question: How long should these protections last for big celebrities whose fame never fades?
Nagarjuna’s advocate, Pravin Anand, painted a picture of the actor’s stellar career: 95 films under his belt, two national awards, and a reputation as a "celluloid scientist" for his versatile roles. His breakthrough in the 1988 film Shiva reportedly shook up Indian cinema. With over 6 million followers on X and more than 8 million on Facebook, Nagarjuna’s massive online presence makes him a prime target for digital scams.
This isn’t the first time the Delhi High Court has cracked down on celeb rights abuses. It recently blocked websites from exploiting the names, images, and voices of Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Karan Johar. As AI and online platforms grow, these rulings highlight the growing need to protect personalities from misuse in India’s booming entertainment scene.
