Runaway horse ‘Sundance’ dashes down highways near JFK Airport before safe capture: wild footage
Late Sunday evening, a horse barreled down several highways around JFK International Airport, sending a wave of surprise through drivers before Port Authority officers were able to bring it safely under control. Social‑media users posted footage that showed the animal racing along the JFK Expressway, leaping past motels and even climbing an exit ramp that feeds the airfield. Motorists gave the horse plenty of room, even as traffic near the terminal began to backlog, the video shows.
Officials say the equine, named Sundance, somehow slipped onto airport property before heading south onto the Van Wyck Expressway. According to Gothamist, a Port Authority officer “safely contained and captured the horse” near Terminal 1 at about 6:30 p.m. Sundance emerged from the night’s escapade unharmed, and was later returned to its home at Curly’s Cowboy Center in Southeast Queens—only a mile from JFK—after confirmation from the agency and the center’s founder, R.W. “Curly” Hall. Hall explained that a gate was left unsealed while caretakers were feeding and cleaning stalls after a holiday event, saying, “It was just a mishap. That’s all.” The horse does not belong to Hall, who is one of several caretakers; the true owner was on hand that evening.
The Port Authority Police Lieutenants Benevolent Association praised “quick thinking and calm control” from Lieutenant Calderon, who wrangled the animal. Their Instagram post read, “Unexpected calls demand steady leadership,” followed by, “This is what leadership looks like in real time.” The agency has not yet responded to a request for comment. Earlier this year, on Sept. 1, a separate runaway horse in Manhattan caused a commotion when a horse hitched to a buggy in Central Park ran wild, forcing the carriage driver and passengers to flee as the animal went “haywire” and eventually crashed into a parked carriage near Bethesda Fountain.
