In a touching show of support, Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda stepped in to help families hit hard by the tragic road accident in Hassan, Karnataka. On Sunday, Gowda announced Rs 1 lakh ex-gratia payment for each of the 10 people who lost their lives in the crash during a Ganesh immersion procession.
The accident shook the region on September 11 when a speeding truck slammed into the procession, killing 10 and injuring 22 others. Many of the injured are now recovering in local hospitals, including a government one.
Speaking to reporters, Gowda shared his party’s commitment. “A horrific incident took place in Hassan, claiming 10 lives and leaving 22 seriously hurt,” he said. “The state government is offering Rs 5 lakh to families of the deceased and covering treatment for the injured. The Prime Minister has also announced Rs 2 lakh for the kin of those who died and Rs 50,000 for the injured. As a smaller party, JD(S) is stepping up with Rs 1 lakh per deceased family. For the injured, we’re giving Rs 25,000 or Rs 20,000 based on injury severity.”
This comes amid widespread calls for more aid. A day earlier, Karnataka Minister Krishna Byre Gowda visited the injured at a hospital, checking on their progress. BJP leader CT Ravi also stopped by HIMES Hospital in Hassan, where he met victims, asked about their health, and promised government help for recovery.
Ravi didn’t hold back while talking to the media. He called the current compensation for the Hassan Ganesh procession accident victims “inadequate” and pushed the Karnataka government to bump it up to Rs 50 lakh per family.
The Prime Minister’s Office has already acted, confirming Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for each deceased person’s next of kin and Rs 50,000 for every injured individual. As Hassan road accident news spreads, these gestures highlight the community’s push for better support in the wake of such devastating Karnataka tragedies.
