In a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, popularly known as C.P. Radhakrishnan, swore in as the 15th Vice President of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and leaders from various parties joining the event.
What caught everyone’s eye was the surprise appearance of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. This marked his first public outing since he abruptly resigned in July 2025. Dhankhar, who served as the 14th Vice President, stepped down citing health reasons, but the opposition didn’t buy it. They accused the government of forcing him out, sparking a major political clash.
After quitting on July 21, Dhankhar stayed away from public events and media interactions. Some say he chose to keep a low profile deliberately. His presence at the swearing-in added an emotional layer to the day.
Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s choice for Vice President of India, clinched the election on September 9 with 452 votes. The opposition’s candidate, B. Sudhakar Reddy, got 300 votes in a tight race. This victory paves the way for Radhakrishnan to lead the Rajya Sabha and support the nation’s growth.
A seasoned politician, Radhakrishnan has a rich background. He served as a two-time BJP MP from Coimbatore and led the BJP in Tamil Nadu. His journey started decades ago with the Jana Sangh, which later became the BJP. Now, as the new Vice President, he brings experience and dedication to the role.
Dhankhar himself congratulated Radhakrishnan in a heartfelt letter after the win. "Your rise to this esteemed position shows the trust our nation’s representatives have in you," he wrote. Dhankhar added that under Radhakrishnan’s guidance, the Vice President’s office would gain even more respect and prestige.
