Football: Ex-Palmeiras midfielder Robinho Signorini retires

Rio de Janeiro, Dec. 27 – According to IANS, former midfield star Robinho Signorini has called time on his playing career, announcing his retirement after nearly twenty years on the pitch.
The 38‑year‑old’s deal with Serie C outfit Brusque concluded earlier this month, and although he was approached with offers to keep playing, he chose instead to transition into coaching. He will serve as an assistant at Nautico, a club slated to compete in Serie B next season. In a post on social media, Robinho said, “I am putting a full stop to my journey as a professional athlete. However, I will continue in the world of football, now from outside the four lines.”

Robinho’s club résumé is extensive. He tasted top‑flight glory with Palmeiras, winning the Serie A and the Copa do Brasil, and later added two more Copa do Brasil titles with Cruzeiro. He also had spells at Varginha, Mogi Mirim, Avai, Coritiba and Paysandu, as reported by Xinhua, before ending his career in the lower tiers of Brazilian football. Expressing gratitude, he wrote, “I thank all the clubs, teammates, coaches, fans, support staff, directors, and agents who were part of my story as a player. Without you, I would not have achieved my collective and individual goals.”

Atlético Mineiro eyes a high‑profile return

Football moves are also shaping up across Brazil’s top clubs. Botafogo’s captain Marlon Freitas could soon switch sides to rival Palmeiras, according to local sports outlets. Negotiations are in the preliminary stages, with Palmeiras reportedly willing to pay USD 6 million for the 30‑year‑old holding man, the sports daily Gazeta Esportiva notes. The transfer would bolster Abel Ferreira’s midfield after Aníbal Moreno’s exit to River Plate.

Freitas made 186 appearances for Botafogo in all competitions since joining from Atlético Goianiense in 2023. He led the side to a Copa Libertadores and Serie A title last year, while Palmeiras finished second in this season’s Serie A behind Flamengo and fell short of the Libertadores final.

In other news, Atlético Mineiro has reportedly submitted an offer to pull Brazilian international Fred back from Fenerbahçe. The 32‑year‑old, who remains under contract with the Turkish club until June 2027, has expressed interest in returning to his homeland, as Globo Esporte reports. Sports director Paulo Bracks is said to have reached out to Fred’s representatives to discuss financial terms.

Fred tallied 104 appearances for Fenerbahçe since his August 2023 move from Manchester United, scoring nine goals and providing 18 assists. The midfielder grew up in Belo Horizonte and played for Atlético Mineiro’s youth teams until he was 16.
