VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan slammed the Tamil Nadu government and police on Thursday for what he called “selective action” in the tragic Karur stampede. The deadly crowd crush at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s public rally claimed 41 lives, and Thirumavalavan questioned why only one organizer faces charges while big names walk free.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the VCK president and MP described the police response as “shocking and biased.” He highlighted that authorities filed a case against TVK state general secretary Bussi Anand over the September 27 incident, but haven’t touched Vijay or other top figures like Arun Raj and election campaign chief Aadhav Arjunan.
“Why book Anand alone for the Karur stampede that killed 41 people?” Thirumavalavan asked. “If he’s responsible, then Vijay and the main organizers who planned the event must answer too. They managed the rally—didn’t they create the chaos?”
Thirumavalavan accused the government of protecting the powerful. “Are we living in a system where the strong escape while the weak get hit?” he said. He shared a personal story from nearly 20 years ago, when police in Villupuram district slapped cases on him for a violent clash he knew nothing about. “The then SP Ravi acted fast against me back then,” he noted. “So why the hesitation now with Vijay’s team? This shows clear bias.”
He stressed that blame in such tragedies goes beyond low-level staff. “Top leaders who delayed responses, ignored crowd safety, and made key decisions bear the real responsibility,” Thirumavalavan said. “Why isn’t the same rule applied here?”
The leader demanded answers from the state: Are political ties blocking a fair probe into the Vijay rally stampede? He called for equal justice, no matter the person’s fame or influence. “When 41 lives are lost in the Karur tragedy, no one should get a free pass based on power or popularity.”
The stampede happened during Vijay’s “meet the people” event in Karur, injuring over 60 others too. A probe team headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan is now investigating the full story behind the Tamil Nadu rally disaster.
