CM Stalin inaugurates TN’s longest flyover ‘Avinashi Road Elevated Corridor’

Coimbatore – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin opened the 10.1‑kilometre Avinashi Road Elevated Corridor on Thursday, turning it into the state’s longest flyover and India’s third‑largest. The new bridge, named after industrial pioneer G.D. Naidu, should cut traffic jams between Goldwins and Uppilipalayam, one of the city’s toughest stretches.

The 228‑crore project covers nearly 5 acres of land and was built to solve a major bottleneck on Avinashi Road, which links Coimbatore to its international airport. Before the flyover, drivers spent at least 45 minutes to travel just 10 km during rush hour. Now the route can be covered in under ten minutes.

The elevated corridor stretches 10 km, combining six‑lane and four‑lane stretches for a total of ten lanes. It crosses key junctions – Airport, Codisia, Hope College, Nava India, Lakshmi Mills and Anna Statue – and even cuts through a busy railway crossing, lifting one of the area’s biggest choke points.

Four access platforms on the flyover, located at the airport, Hope College, Nava India and Anna Statue, give local commuters easy entry and exit. The project also becomes Tamil Nadu’s first flyover to feature a complete rainwater‑harvesting system along its nearly 10‑kilometre length, a unique green‑infrastructure move.

Safety and visibility upgrades include reinforced barriers, roller shutters and modern LED lighting, ensuring drivers can navigate safely even at night. With final touches only at the Anna Statue ramp and drainage lines, the flyover has opened for public use.

At the ceremony, the flyover glowed with decorative lights as Chief Minister Stalin walked and drove across it, inspecting the new road. Public Works Minister E.V. Velu, who had monitored the construction, said the project met the CM’s directive for urgent completion.

The Avinashi Road flyover is poised to become a key landmark, boosting Coimbatore’s connectivity and speeding travel to Salem, Erode, Tiruppur and Avinashi.
