Zubeen Garg’s death certificate mentions “drowning” as cause of death, Assam CM assures further probe

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has promised a deeper probe into the sudden death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg. He shared this update after getting the official death certificate from Singapore, which lists drowning as the cause.

Zubeen Garg, a huge star in Assam and across India, died tragically in a scuba diving mishap in Singapore on September 19. His body arrived in Delhi first, then flew commercially to Guwahati on Sunday morning, bringing fans face-to-face with their loss.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma explained the details. “The Singapore High Commission sent us Zubeen Garg’s death certificate, and it says he drowned,” he said. “But that’s not the full post-mortem report—we need that too. We’re pushing hard for it.” The chief minister revealed that Assam’s Chief Secretary is reaching out to the Singapore ambassador right away. Once they have the report, they’ll hand everything over to the state’s CID for a thorough investigation.

Garg had traveled to Singapore for the Northeast India Festival when the accident happened. Festival organizers released a statement saying he ran into breathing problems while scuba diving. Rescuers gave him CPR on the spot and rushed him to Singapore General Hospital. Sadly, doctors in the ICU pronounced him dead around 2:30 p.m. IST, despite their best efforts.

For Zubeen Garg’s final farewell, Sarma announced that the rites will take place on September 23 at about 8 a.m. in his ancestral village of Kamarkuchi. The procession starts from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, leading to a full state funeral. Sarma thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for stepping in to help smooth things out. “Amit Shah called me two or three times today,” Sarma noted. “He checked on our plans for the singer’s last journey and promised full support.”

In the meantime, thousands of heartbroken fans flocked to the sports complex on Sunday to say goodbye to Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most iconic voices. His body rests there now, allowing admirers and friends to pay their respects before the funeral.
