“Bharat will always maintain its freedom of choice, will be voice of global south”: EAM Jaishankar at UNGA

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a strong message at the United Nations General Assembly’s 80th session in New York on September 28. Speaking to world leaders, he stressed that India—known as Bharat—will always stand firm on its freedom of choice and keep championing the Global South.

Jaishankar kicked off his speech by reflecting on the UN’s 80-year history. “The UN Charter calls on us not just to prevent war, but to build peace; not just to defend rights, but to uphold the dignity of every human being,” he said.

He outlined three guiding principles shaping India’s approach to today’s challenges. First is Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance, which drives India’s push for economic independence and innovation. Second comes Atmaraksha, meaning self-protection. Jaishankar emphasized India’s zero-tolerance stance on terrorism, strong border defenses, and vital partnerships abroad. He also highlighted efforts to support Indian communities overseas.

The third principle is Atmavishwas, or self-confidence. “Bharat will always maintain its freedom of choice and will always be a voice of the Global South,” Jaishankar declared, underscoring India’s independent foreign policy.

Jaishankar praised India’s quick action during global crises, especially in its neighborhood. From providing finance and food to fertilizers and fuel, India has stepped up to meet urgent needs. He pointed to humanitarian aid and disaster relief for Myanmar and Afghanistan after recent earthquakes.

India’s contributions go further. Jaishankar noted the country’s role in ensuring safe commerce, fighting piracy, and stopping attacks on shipping in the northern Arabian Sea. Indian soldiers lead UN peacekeeping missions, sailors safeguard maritime routes, and security forces battle terrorism worldwide. Doctors and teachers from India boost human development, while the nation’s industries offer affordable goods, tech experts drive digitization, and training programs welcome global participants.

“These remain the core of our foreign policy,” Jaishankar concluded, showcasing India’s active presence on the world stage.
