Thiruvananthapuram, November 6 – Police in Kerala’s capital finally closed a 22‑year manhunt when they arrested Muthu Kumar, a former teacher accused of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl in 2001.
Kumar, a native of Niramankara in Thiruvananthapuram, fled after the police charged him with raping a student. To stay hidden, he changed his identity, converted religions, and lived under the name “Sam.” For years he lived in Chennai, avoiding phones, bank accounts, and any digital footprint. He even married while hiding in Tamil Nadu, working various jobs and sometimes posing as a priest.
Investigators tracked him through church records and contacts he kept with people in public phone booths. A single call to his Chennai home tipped off the police, who followed the trail to the city. When Kumar saw the officers, he tried to run, but police quickly overpowered him.
He was taken back to Thiruvananthapuram today and will soon appear before a local court to face charges for the 2001 sexual assault case. The arrest is a major step for victims’ justice and signals the state’s resolve to pursue long‑standing crimes.
