Ahmedabad, Nov 29 (LatestNewsX) – everything comes down to a single match. The upcoming qualifier between India and Iran at the EKA Arena will decide if India earns a spot in the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup held in Saudi Arabia.
The Blue Colts sit third in Group D with four points from three games. Meanwhile, Lebanon sits second after four matches with six points, and Iran leads the pack with seven points after three games. Since only the group leader advances, India must beat Iran; a draw would simply suffice for the hosts.
India kicked off their campaign with a 1‑1 draw against Palestine, then secured their first win with a 3‑1 triumph over Chinese Taipei. Their loss to Lebanon (0‑2) in the final match didn’t hurt their prospects, leaving the stage set for a showdown with the Iranian giants. Coach Bibiano Fernandes and his squad remain ready for the challenge.
“Yes, Iran have shown their quality, and we respect them as opponents. It is a big opportunity for us to play them,” Fernandes said. “However, our boys know that form and past results matter little. What counts is who performs on the day. We will prepare to play our game with focus and belief.”
Iran has kept the top spot in Group D so far, coming from 5‑0 over Chinese Taipei, a 1‑1 draw with Lebanon, and a 3‑1 win against Palestine. Fernandes expects a physically demanding encounter and has outlined a plan.
“We know Iran will be physical, direct, and intense. We will have to manage our defence and transitions carefully, and try to exploit moments when we gain possession. At the same time, we will play our game, and not just react,” he added.
The stakes are undeniably high, but the coach insists the pressure will not break his players.
“We have told the players that this is not the moment to think of consequences. It is the moment to think about effort, unity, and playing with heart. Pressure is a part of football, especially at this stage,” he said confidently. “But I have belief that the boys will stay calm, trust each other, and fight together.”
The match opens at 19:30 IST on Sunday, 30 November 2025, and will be streamed live on plus.fifa.com.
