Kabul residents are facing major headaches from slower internet speeds after fiber optic services shut down in 10 Afghan provinces last week. The outage, triggered by a Taliban order, has hit daily life hard, from work to online classes.
In Kabul, people say the sluggish connections are throwing off their routines. Wajid, who works at a pharmaceutical company in the capital, relies on the internet for 90% of his job. “We need fast internet because sometimes when we send a location, it doesn’t go through or get delivered,” he told Tolo News. “This creates a lot of problems for us in the office.”
The disruptions are rippling out to education and personal chats too. Shams, a marketer, worries about falling behind. “If we have high-speed internet, we can progress in marketing,” he said. “And in areas where internet access is better, we can help our country move forward.”
Students like Saleem Rahini are struggling with lessons delivered via WhatsApp, YouTube, and slides. “Since our lessons were progressing through the internet… now with the internet weakening, our access to these resources has decreased significantly,” he explained.
The fiber optic suspension affects Balkh, Kandahar, Herat, Helmand, Nangarhar, Laghman, Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz, and Baghlan provinces. In Herat, social activist Abdul Hadi Qane called for fewer limits on online access. “We expect that no restrictions will be imposed on internet access,” he said. “If any programs are to be implemented, they should minimize harm to the public.”
Folks in Balkh province report big setbacks to businesses, schools, and social lives. One local warned that cutting home internet hurts everything. “A major portion of public services, such as issuing ID cards, passports, and the banking system, depends on the internet,” he said.
As Afghanistan grapples with these Taliban-imposed internet restrictions, many hope for quicker fixes to keep daily life and economic progress on track.
