Bangladesh reports surge in dengue cases, records nine deaths in past 24 hours

Bangladesh is grappling with a sharp rise in dengue cases this year, as health officials report nine new deaths and 740 hospital admissions in the last 24 hours—the highest daily numbers so far. This mosquito-borne disease has hit the country hard, with totals reaching 179 fatalities and more than 40,000 hospitalisations since January.

The latest update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) includes three deaths from the previous day, pushing the 24-hour count to nine. It’s a grim reminder of the ongoing dengue outbreak in Bangladesh, following a spike earlier this month when six people died on September 11.

These recent deaths happened in hospitals across the country, including three at Barishal’s Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital, two at Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka, and two at Barguna’s Patharghata Upazila Health Complex. Other cases came from facilities in Mymensingh and Chattogram. Among those who passed away, six were men and three were women, aged between 24 and 65.

September has turned out to be the deadliest month yet, with 57 dengue deaths recorded so far—beating July’s total of 41. Earlier in the year, the disease claimed 10 lives in January, three in February, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August. March saw no reported fatalities.

Hospital admissions tell a similar story of the dengue surge in Bangladesh. July brought in 10,684 patients, August had 10,496, and September alone has seen 10,355 so far. Of the 740 new cases in the past day, 239 came from Dhaka’s two city corporations. The rest spread out like this: 166 from Barishal, 145 from other parts of Dhaka Division, 77 from Chattogram, 52 from Khulna, 28 from Rajshahi, 22 from Mymensingh, eight from Sylhet, and three from Rangpur.

Right now, 2,021 dengue patients are receiving treatment across Bangladesh, with 756 in Dhaka and 1,265 in other districts. Relief teams and healthcare workers are keeping a close watch and providing care nationwide.

The DGHS has monitored dengue cases in Bangladesh since 2000, and this year ranks among the toughest. For comparison, the worst outbreak hit in 2023, with over 321,000 hospitalisations and 1,705 deaths. Officials are urging everyone to stay alert—eliminate standing water to stop mosquitoes, use repellents, and seek quick medical help if symptoms like fever or severe pain appear.
