Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announces run for NY governor, setting up Stefanik showdown

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman officially announced his run for New York governor on Tuesday, setting up a potentially costly and heated Republican primary against Representative Elise Stefanik.

In a Facebook post unveiling his candidacy, Blakeman said the state was in trouble, “our taxes, utility bills and crime rates have risen under current policies.” He declared that “Put New York First” would be his guiding principle and that “New  Yorkers deserve leadership that works — not more empty promises.” He’s pledged to challenge Gov. Kathy Hochul and deliver tangible results for families across the state.

To go with the announcement, Blakeman released a campaign video that touts Nassau County as the “safest in America,” highlighting the county’s partnership with the Trump administration’s efforts to curb illegal immigration.

The former president has yet to disclose whether he’ll throw his support behind one of the candidates. He had previously named Stefanik as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, then pulled her name in order to help the GOP secure a narrow House majority. Speaking Monday, Trump described both challengers as strong: “She’s great. He’s also great,” adding that he’s still “I’ll think about” an endorsement.
