100 years of RSS: PM Modi releases coin featuring Bharat Mata, stamp recalling 1963 R-Day parade
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a big milestone on Wednesday by releasing a special commemorative postage stamp and a silver coin for the 100th anniversary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He praised the organization’s key role in building the nation during the event at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.
Joining Modi were RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In his speech to the crowd, Modi spotlighted the Rs 100 silver coin’s unique design. “On one side, you’ll see the National Emblem,” he said. “The other side shows Bharat Mata in her Varada Mudra pose, along with a lion and a dedicated Swayamsevak bowing to her. This marks the first time in independent India’s history that Bharat Mata appears on our currency.”
The pure silver coin features Bharat Mata on the reverse side, with three RSS Swayamsevaks saluting her in a nod to the traditional poses at RSS gatherings. The front side displays the iconic Lion Capital from the Ashoka Pillar.
Modi also unveiled the ‘100 Years of the RSS’ postage stamp, tying it to a proud chapter in the group’s history. “This stamp captures a special moment from the 1963 Republic Day Parade,” he explained. “RSS Swayamsevaks marched proudly that year on what was then Rajpath—now Kartavya Path—after Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru invited them. Nehru recognized their brave work during the 1962 India-China war.”
For RSS members, that 1963 parade stands as a powerful symbol of national service and commitment to India. The releases celebrate a century of the organization’s influence on the country’s social and cultural fabric.
